Prepping and Draping

This video demonstrates prepping and draping of the patient. For the skin prep we use povidone iodine 10%. A wad of gaze dipped in the 10% solution is used to prep the skin, proceeding from the lid margins and eyelids outward, avoiding repeated passes over the same area or returning to areas previously prepped. This process is repeated a second time. A clean gauze is then used to wipe away excess povidone solution, again proceeding from inside to out to avoid contamination of clean areas.

Here our patient is draped using a specialty ophthalmological drape that is included in our cataract packs. The only area that remains exposed is the eye to be operated on.
