Ekin was born and raised in Istanbul then moved to Montreal, Quebec. He attended Dawson College where he earned a Diploma of Collegial Studies (DEC) in Health and Life Sciences, graduating on the Dean’s list with Honours with Distinction. Fueled by a growing interest in healthcare and research, he is pursuing a BSc in Neuroscience in the neurophysiology and computation stream at McGill University. Ekin has worked in clinical research through an internship at the Clinical Research Unit at the Montreal Neurological Institute; working with several neurological disease teams such as ALS and Alzheimer’s teams. He then completed a summer project, funded by an NSERC USRA awarded by the McGill faculty of medicine, investigating the role of axonal regeneration pathways in biological resilience and physiologic rates and longevity. Now at the Bowie lab, he is investigating the different missense mutations present in AMPA receptors in the world population, what their neurophysiological properties are and how they relate to various neurological diseases. Ekin is interested in listening to music, playing basketball and cycling.
