Upon realization that life as a firefighter would be far too dangerous, I chose the next best option and began my scientific career as an undergraduate student in the department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at McGill University. After completing my bachelor of science in 2007, which included a minor in psychology, I wisely decided to join Terry’s lab at McGill. What began as a pursuit of a Masters degree quickly evolved into a quest for a PhD, in which I’m focusing on the ability of cells to regulate their excitability through surface targeting of inwardly rectifying potassium channels (Kir3) which are coupled to GPCRs. I’m specifically interested in determining the post-internalization trafficking of Kir3 channels in complex with their cognate receptors and G proteins in addition to studying the role of G proteins in the maturation of Kir3 channels after synthesis in the ER. After all is said and done I hope to have gained the expertise and fortitude required to defeat my supervisor in a match of squash, and of course, to advance the frontiers of science.
