The overall purpose of this 4-week elective is to acquaint the student with the
principles of family medicine. During the rotation, students will work

medicine nurse, and several residents. They will follow patients under the
supervision of team members. The degree of responsibility for patient
care will depend on the level of training and previous experience.
Minimum 4 week electives for both McGill and Non-McGill students. Requests for 2 or 3 week electives will be handled on an individual basis.
Students will gain experience in the management of
patient problems in a variety of primary care settings. Emphasis will be on
skills of interviewing, physical assessment, data gathering and contextual
patient care. Elective students will also participate in the teaching
program set up for Family Medicine Residents and students.
Students can request electives at any of the McGill teaching sites, either in Montreal or the rural areas. A complete list of teaching sites can be obtained found under the Family Medicine website:

The following specialized electives are also available through the Family Medicine Department:
Coordinator: Dr. Michael Malus

The Adolescent Unit at the Herzl Family Practice Center at the Jewish
General Hospital offers an elective in Adolescent Health Care. The
elective is based primarily on our adolescent outreach program wherein Herzl
staff physicians, residents and medical students go weekly to Montreal area
high schools to hold classroom discussions on teenage health issues and
distribute wallet sized cards offering a 24 hour medical service. In
addition to contributing to the care of the teenagers who do call on the
line, the elective students also spend time at either the Montreal
Children's Adolescent unit or St. Justine Hospital's Adolescent unit wherein
they can participate in some specialty aspects of adolescent care including
an eating disorder clinic, adolescent gynecology, a sexual abuse clinic and
a "street kids" unit. The time at Herzl includes
comprehensive small group sessions led by a qualified drug counselor on
street drugs and ambulatory drug addiction treatment for teenagers. If
you are interested in this elective, you should contact Susanne Gomes
at the McGill Family Medicine office (contact information given above).
Coordinator: Dr. Marisa Zampini
Assistant: Ms. Ann Continelli
A special elective in "Women's Health in Family Practice" can
also be arranged through the Family Medicine Teaching Office. This
elective is coordinated by Dr. Marisa Zampini. This rotation presents the
opportunity for students to experience a community-based practice in family
practice with an emphasis in Women's Health. The population will
include prenatal and post-partum women. Infants, children, and primary
care gynecology will be included. In addition to the exposure in
clinic offices, the student will have the opportunity to attend a
breastfeeding clinic, youth STD, and community clinic. Additional
clinical exposures to breast clinic, menopause clinic, osteoporosis clinic,
and pregnancy termination clinics can be arranged after discussion with the
elective coordinator. While the focus of the rotation will be women's
health, patients from the entire spectrum of family medicine will be seen.
Coordinator: Dr. Meira Stern
Assistant: Ms. Ann Continelli
The goal of this elective is to provide exposure to substance use
treatment and specifically to methadone maintenance as a treatment option
for opiate addiction. During clinic days, the student would work closely,
with methadone-licensed physicians, as well as, with the methadone team
(nurse, counselor, psychologist, and social worker). The students will be exposed to sites outside of the clinic. This would
include a visit to the Cactus Needle exchange program and the “Met a d’ame”
support program. Each student will be able to observe and learn the skills
of a detailed substance use assessment (Addiction Severity Index). Throughout the rotation the student would attend methadone team meetings. Opportunities to work with public health may also be possible through this
elective. If you are interested in this elective, you should contact Susanne
Gomes
at the McGill Family Medicine office (contact information given above).
Coordinator: Dr. Michael Bouhadana
Assistant: Ms. Ann Continelli
Family physicians perform many
roles in the context of serving the communities in which they work. Part of
this responsibility includes the care of hospitalized patients. During this
elective students would have the opportunity to work on a hospital ward with a
family physician (hospitalist). The student would provide care for admitted
patients, work as members of the team to provide care and learn how the
principles of family medicine apply to the work of a hospitalist. Students will
have the opportunity to attend teaching sessions offered as part of this
experience. There will be minimal ambulatory exposure during this elective.
This 4-week elective experience is available to students who have already
completed a core rotation in family medicine.
If you are interested in
applying for this elective, you should contact Susanne Gomes at the McGill
Family Medicine office (contact information given above).
Coordinator: Dr. Michael Dworkind
This elective is based at SMBD
Jewish General Hospital, in the Herzl Family Practice Center and with the
supportive care team. The student will work with family physicians who include
palliative care as one component of their practice profile. The principles of
family medicine and palliative care (both symptom management and end of life
care) will be emphasized through case discussions and formal teaching sessions
in addition to clinical care. Clinical exposure will include ambulatory family
medicine clinics, ambulatory palliative care clinics, in-patient consultation,
palliative care ward, and home care. The student will participate in rounds with
both the inpatient ward, and the homecare teams and through this will develop a
better understanding the roles of the members of the multidisciplinary team
implicated in the care of this patient population. Students with particular
interests may be accommodated after consultation with the elective coordinator.
