The curriculum consists of: Basis
of Medicine (BOM), Introduction to Clinical Medicine
(ICM),
Core Clerkship and Senior Clerkship.
Units of the Physicianship
Program are present in each curricular
component. Physician Apprenticeship is a longitudinal
course throughout the program (Years 1 to 4). Dental
students will follow Dentistry Apprenticeship 1 & 2
during BOM.
Basis of Medicine (BOM
- Year 1): Occupies the first 18 months of medical school. It provides a systems-based, integrated approach to normal and abnormal function. Eight units, in blocks of three to fourteen weeks, cover basic sciences applicable to clinical practice.
Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM
- Year 2): Provides a clinical experience, using both in-patient and ambulatory settings. The initial segment of this component, Professional Skills teaches the physical examination, medical ethics and evidence-based medicine. Subsequent to this are rotations in various clinical disciplines: internal medicine, pediatrics, family medicine, neurology, oncology, radiology, surgery, anaesthesia and ophthalmology.
Core Clerkship (Year 3): Consists of five 8 week rotations, one 4-week rotation, one 4-week elective, Physicianship 3 and Physician Apprenticeship 3. Option: There is also an Integrated Clerkship option available during the third year.
Senior Clerkship (Year 4): Consists of three 4-week compulsory rotations, four 4-week electives (either a clinical or basic science seminar), Physician Apprenticeship 4 and Physicianship 4, a 4-week course, includingMedicine & Society, Public Health and Communication Plus. Students in Integrated Clerkship will have seven 4-week Electives, Physician Apprenticeship 4 and Physicianship 4.
Physicianship: Physicianship 1 and 2A take place during BOM. Physicianship 3 and 4 take place in parallel with the clerkships. Physician Apprenticeship consists of small groups that meet throughout the four years. Physicianship and Physician Apprenticeship courses must be successfully completed during the relevant promotion periods. Dentistry Apprenticeships 1 & 2 are for dental students.
