INTRODUCTION

August 2012

To all Med-I Students:

Congratulations and welcome to the Faculty of Medicine! We are delighted to have you in the Class of 2016.

It is a privilege to be a physician, to be able to care for people, and to continually learn about the science of medicine. We are confident you have the ability to become excellent physicians, and we hope that you will enjoy these first four years of your lifelong learning experience. Our goal is to help you to become the best physicians possible.

You have all been very successful academically. In the next 18 months the volume of material you will be expected to cover may be greater than anything you have done before. It requires early and consistent attention on your part. You can lighten the load by working steadily from the beginning.

The stresses and strains of medical school can occasionally be significant. Our objective is to help alleviate any pressures to make your experience as meaningful and academically enriching as possible. If you encounter problems at any time during your training, we are available to discuss any issues in confidence, and we can offer you support and advice.

The Faculty of Medicine administrative staff on the 6th floor of the McIntyre and on the 2nd floor of the Med Annex is here to ensure the smooth implementation of the curriculum. Please feel free to contact us as needed, or to let us know of any concerns. We are available at various times throughout the week. You can make an appointment to see us at the phone numbers available under the staff administrative staff section.

As assistant dean for student affairs, Dr. Gupta is your first line when you are in distress whether or not it is affecting your academic performance. She also supervises your full time career advisor and oversees student wellness initiatives including changes to improve your learning environment. (Visit the Student and Resident Affairs website >> )

As Associate Dean of Undergraduate Medical Education, Dr. Primavesi is available to discuss any academic matters. (See the Evaluation & Promotion IntroductionGeneral Principles)

The Student Aid office will provide counselling about budgeting and debt management, and when necessary secure financial aid for you:

You are reminded that the Orientation & Registration sessions held August 21 – 23, 2012, inclusive, are mandatory:

Good luck to you all in the coming year.
