Decision Tree Supplemental Information
Violations of the code of conduct by the
student are dealt
with first by the Associate Dean, Medical Education
and Student Affairs, and ultimately by the Committee
on Student Promotions and Curricular Outcomes
(CSPCO). It is important to note that since medicine
is a profession, our standards may be more rigorous
than those for some other programs at McGill.
Violations of the code of conduct
by a teacher should be brought to the attention of
-
the Assistant Dean, Office of
Student Affairs (514-398-5557) OR
-
the Associate Dean, Medical
Education and Student Affairs OR
-
the University ombudsperson
(514-398-7059)
All complaints will be treated
confidentially and appropriate individuals will be
contacted only when acceptable to both parties. If
acceptable, a meeting may be set up with both
parties in an effort to mediate.
Definition of Mistreatment:
The American Association of Medical Colleges defines medical student mistreatment as public belittlement; threats of or actual physical punishment; requirements to perform personal services, such as shopping; sexual harassment; and discrimination or offensive remarks based on gender, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation.
Categories of mistreatment:
•General Mistreatment
–Physical harm/punishment; personal service(s); belittlement/humiliation
•Sexual Mistreatment
–Denied opportunities based on gender; request for sexual favors in exchange for grades; unwanted sexual advances; offensive sexist remarks; lower grades/evaluations based on gender
•Racial/Ethnic Mistreatment
–Denied opportunities based on race/ethnicity; offensive remarks/names; lower grades/evaluations based on race
•Sexual Orientation Mistreatment
–Denied opportunities based on sexual orientation; offensive remarks/names; lower grades/evaluations
The frequency of
harassment/abuse/mistreatment incidents will be
monitored and an annual report submitted to the
Dean. In this process, confidentiality will be
maintained. This report may result in further
enquiries and/or professional development
initiatives.
Note: Under Quebec law,
complaints regarding hospital medical staff,
residents and students may also be directed to the
medical examiner for the institution where the
violation took place.
