J.D. MacLean Centre for Tropical Diseases at McGill Universitys

 The Centre has an active Tropical Disease Clinic with access to a steady flow of clinical material. The parasitologic specimens are prepared in two different formats:

a.  Quality assurance/control specimens: Specimens meeting the needs of Quality Assurance programs or parasitology quality control requirements.

b.   Teaching specimens: Collections of stained specimens with written descriptions of the diagnostic morphology found in each specimen.

1. Blood Parasites : Availability may vary. Discounts apply for orders over 1000 slides.

                 a.  Malaria thick and thin smears, unfixed, unstained

*Minimum order 100 slides                                        $3.50/slide               

b.  Trypansoma cruzi , Trypanosoma brucei

2.  Intestinal Protozoans: (in SAF, or 10% formalin)                   

                  ·        $100/ml. Discounts apply for volumes greater than 100 ml.

·        All intestinal protozoa specimens are prepared from stool specimens diluted with  preservative   (3   volumes of preservative to 1 volume of stool). The minimum number of protozoa are 1 per every 8-10 high dry fields (X 40)

    2.  Helminths (in 10% formalin) 

      ·        $100/ml for any of the following parasites.
·        Discounts apply for volumes greater than one litre.

Teaching slide sets

a. Malaria slide set:

            ·        Set contains description  of the various forms of the species
