Dr. Ng Ying Kin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at McGill University. He is also a research scientist and Director of the Clinical Psychopharmacology Unit in the Clinical Research Division of the Douglas Mental Health University Institute. A neurochemist, his main areas of interests are in the neurochemical correlates of psychiatric disorders; clinical psychopharmacology, neurochemical pathology of inherited diseases, and techniques of analytical biochemistry, including various forms of chromatography and spectroscopy, immunoassays, and receptor assays. The major activity of his laboratory is in the biochemical analyses of human body fluids and autopsy tissues. Identification of peripheral biological markers is important for the early diagnosis of psychiatric disorders and in their management. Thus, Dr. Ng Ying Kin collaborates on several ongoing research projects investigating schizophrenia and an array of neuroleptics; the role of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis in affective disorders and clinical trials of novel pharmacotherapeutics; eating disorders, their co-morbidity with alcoholism, and relevant genetics factors; the involvement of various neurotransmitters in borderline personality disorder; the profile of neurohormone secretions in age-related disorders; and the role of melatonin in psychiatric disorders. With such a broad spectrum of research, it is not surprising that Dr. Ng Ying Kin has made valuable contributions within various research arenas. For example, he has conducted laboratory diagnoses of various inherited neurological disorders (e.g., Batten Disease) and psychiatric disorders, including major depression and Alzheimerís Disease. He has also demonstrated an association of serotonin with different personality traits in eating disorders. In addition, Dr. Ng Ying Kin has shown the usefulness of peripheral neurochemical measurements, as well as therapeutic drug monitoring, in evaluating treatment outcome with neuroleptics and antidepressants in multicentre international clinical trials.
