Non-Ministry Funded Positions
The Faculty and the Collège des médecins du
Québec
define a Fellow as a medical doctor enrolled in a residency program, but
paid by sources other than the Régie de l'assurance-maladie du Québec
(Medicare). Acceptable scholarships can be granted by a government, a
scientific or international organization, a university or faculty of
medicine. All other scholarships (for example, self-funding) will be
refused. Unfunded training is not possible.
The minimum acceptable
bursary is the equivalent of the R-1 salary (approx. $42,000 per year).
Additionally, scholarships must cover the tuition and other student
services fees. Please consult the appropriate section on this:
Student Services and Fees.
Fellows are registered and must pay the full
amount of tuition and student services fees. Only offers for fellowship
positions emanating from the Postgrad Admissions office, Postgraduate
Medical Education are considered valid and binding.

The roles of Fellows have
been defined as follows:
(1)
Clinical Fellows
A doctor enrolled in one
year of training which will be 75% or more clinical. This year may count
as one of the regular years of residency or as the optional year of
clinical training required in the regulations of the Collège des
médecins du Québec and the program. A Clinical Fellow is paid by sources
other than Ministry of Health. He/she must be included in the
pedagogical quota of residents allotted to a hospital and to the
training program of the specialty concerned.
(2)
Clinical & Research Fellow
A physician training in
research who might have a varying degree of clinical contact (less than
25% of the time). This year may count as the optional year of a program
in which the content is not specified and left to the program of the
specialty concerned. He/she is paid by a fund other than Ministry of
Health. He/she must obtain a training card from the Collège des médecins
du Québec. A Clinical and Research Fellow is not included in the
pedagogical quota of residents allotted to a hospital and to the
training program of the specialty concerned.
(3)
Research Fellow
A physician having no
patient contact whose full-time responsibilities are in research. He/she
does not get a training card from the Collège des médecins. In order to
obtain credit for certification purposes in a specialty, he/she should
submit a request to the Credentials Committee of the Royal College of
Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and/or the Collège des médecins du
Québec for study. This trainee is not included in the pedagogical quota.
(4) Super
Fellow
A physician who is
recognized as a specialist in Canada or abroad who wishes to come to
McGill to obtain an expertise in one of our programs and who holds a
scholarship from his/her home government, university or faculty of
medicine may obtain a training card from the Collège des médecins for
one or two years for this purpose. Special arrangements may be made for
funding between his/her home university and the McGill Specialty
Department. This agreement is conditional upon the physician's
commitment to return home upon completion of this training.
ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility for this type of
training position is normally valid for one application year only. The training card
may not be renewed for more than three years. Exceptions may be made for
physicians accepted in an exchange program approved by the Collège des
médecins du Québec and the Ministry of Health of Quebec. The Faculty will not
accept such candidates for a period shorter than one year.
