Ministry-Funded Residency Positions

In Quebec, there are several kinds of Ministry-funded residency positions. Eligibility criteria and application process can be found under each section.  Please note that this information may be updated at any time and is governed by the Quebec MSSS decree in force each year.  The application deadline date for these positions is the last Friday in November each year.

There are two types of positions funded by the MSSS:  the Contingent régulier and the Contingent particulier.

Contingent régulier:  Eligible applicants are able to apply via CaRMS.  There are two applicant profiles eligible to apply for these positions:

Regular entries: R-1 entry level positions for current year graduates of a Canadian or American medical school (Canadian Citizens or Permanents Residents only; exception:  Quebec visa trainees may apply for these positions.  Out of province visa students are not eligible).

Canadian Citizens, Permanent Residents of Canada or Foreign Citizens who are International Medical Graduates: Canadian Citizens, landed immigrants or Foreign Citizens who are International Medical Graduates.

Contingent particulier:  The Quebec Government has created a "special quota" called the Contingent particulier, via which we are able to consider the following categories of applicants.  There are 60 positions for this special quota:  33 in the Specialties (limited numbers in the C group) and 24 for Family Medicine based programs (e.g. CFPC Emergency Medicine Certificare, CFPC Care of the Elderly Certificate, joint CFPC/Royal College program in Palliative Medicine).  These positions are shared between the 4 Quebec Faculties of Medicine.

Cheminement particulier: for Quebec MD’s who have trained outside of Quebec for at least 1 year. Also eligible under this category are Quebec MD's who began a residency program in Quebec, who withdrew from that program and who have not been admitted in a residency program for a minimum of 12 months.

Canadian Transfer Quota: for Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada who are graduates of a Canadian medical school outside of Quebec or a US medical school, who are currently registered in a course of postgraduate training elsewhere in Canada outside Quebec, and who wish to train in Quebec.
