EOG tests > Pursuit without target

Here the subject will attempt to generate smooth eye movements while shifting his/her gaze between two stationary targets.

Procedure
The sweep duration is set to 10 seconds, and the subject is told to sit 12 inches from the computer monitor. The "pursuit without target" option is chosen, and the subject attempts to generate smooth eye movements while moving the eyes from one stationary object to the other.
Stationary Targets

Results: Pursuit without targets

Comments: The results are markedly different from those of horizontal smooth pursuit. Instead of a smooth triangular wave, a square wave is seen, reflecting the saccadic eye movement from one target to the other. Thus we observe that it is impossible for the eyes to perform smooth pursuit without a moving target.
