Molecular  Mechanisms of Cellular Acid-Base Homeostasis

Left:  Sodium-Potassium-ATPase provides the driving force for the sodium/proton exchanger.
Right:  Ion channels, pumps and transporters that modulate organellar pH..

The main areas of research in the lab are:
  • structure-function relationships of the sodium/proton exchanger or antiporter (termed NHE, NHX, NHA) gene family
  • cellular (cytoplasmic and organellar) acid-base homeostasis
  • ionic disturbances associated with cardiac and neural ischemia-reperfusion injuries
