International Applicants

In order to assess educational credentials and those of a McGill degree, please consult the fact sheets on degree equivalency at: http://www.mcgill.ca/gradapplicants/apply/prepare/requirements/international-degree-equivalency.

TOEFL (Demonstrating English Proficiency): Graduate studies in an English language institution requires that students entering the program possess a basic level of competency in: reading; listening; speaking and writing English.  In addition to completing the web application, international applicants who have not received their instruction in English or whose mother tongue is not English and who have not completed a degree program in English must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum Internet-based test (iBT) test score of 100. It is felt that iBT provides better information regarding a student’s ability to communicate academically. Internet-based testing (iBT) has replaced the former paper and computer based formats and is now reported electronically. For more information please see: http://www.mcgill.ca/ece/grad/admissions/ or provide a minimum overall band of 7 on the international English Language Testing System (IELTS).

GRE:  A GRE score on the General Aptitude Test is required by all students who do not have a degree from a North American University.  Students are expected to score in the top 50 percentile.  GRE and TOEFL test scores are reported electronically to McGill University at code: 0935.

NOTE:  APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE PROCESSED UNTIL ALL REQUIRED SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS HAVE BEEN RECEIVED.  INCOMPLETE APPLICATIONS OR THOSE NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ADMISSION ARE KEPT FOR 1 YEAR BEFORE SHREDDING

Admission Information

Only complete applications are reviewed for admission to either the M.Sc. or Ph.D. program.  Complete applications are reviewed by the Graduate Student Admissions and Advisory Committee (GSAAC).  Once an application has been accepted at the Departmental level the student must find a research supervisor who has an appointment in the Department.  It is not necessary to have a supervisor at the time of application, however, an application cannot be recommended to Graduate Faculty unless confirmation from a research supervisor has been received by the Graduate Student Affairs Coordinator.  Final acceptance and notification is then received from Graduate Faculty.

Student Supervision and Tracking

All graduate students are required to have a supervisory committee.  Including the supervisor, three committee members must be full-time academics of the Department.   The supervisory committee assists in the supervision of the student, monitors the progress of the studies and functions as a resource.  The supervisory committee must be established prior to the presentation of the Proposal Seminar.  Annually, students must report their research objectives to the department following approval from their supervisor and committee members (Research Tracking Form 1). Returning students are also requested for report whether or not they completed their research goals for the previous year (Research Tracking Form 2).  Departmental seminar report forms are to be completed by the supervisor or Graduate Student Admissions and Advisory Committee (GSAAC) representative – depending on the type of seminar.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Graduate students can be required to withdraw from their program of study for documented lack of performance in research.  Details on graduate policies and tracking can be obtained at: http://www.mcgill.ca/gps/policies/tracking
