The division of Pediatric Ophthalmology
at the Children's Vision Centre is part
of the Department of Pediatric Surgery
and the Department of Ophthalmology both
at the McGill University Health Centre.
Our mission is to prevent, diagnose,
probe, understand, treat and manage all
pediatric eye diseases. We provide an
exciting teaching atmosphere for medical
students, orthoptists, residents,
fellows and graduate students. In
addition, we have active research
laboratories, funded by CIHR, FFB and
FRSQ, where we perform
electrophysiological and molecular
biological studies to investigate
retinal diseases in animals and man. We
have particular areas of expertise in
eye trauma, uveitis, strabismus,
amblyopia, pediatric cataracts,
electrophysiology of the developing and
diseased eye, retinoblastoma tumor
management and genetic and molecular
biology of blindness due to retinal
degenerations like Leber congenital
amaurosis (LCA) and retinitis pigmentosa
(RP). We are participating in the first
human clinical trial test the safety and
efficacy of a new oral retinoid in the
treatment of childhood blindness (LCA)
due to RPE65 or LRAT
mutations.
