Osler Hour:
A
central tenet of effective healthcare delivery is team work. The
hospital staff strives to work synergistically to provide efficient and
exemplary care. In this vein, medical schools and teaching hospitals
across the country have been emphasizing team building exercises while
investigating what builds successful chemistry among healthcare
professionals. The McGill Osler Society, founded in 1921, aims to
address this challenge with its new Osler Hour series. A monthly
meeting of the minds and mugs, the Osler Hour was conceived to forge
partnerships among future health practitioners of the Province-namely
students in the different Health Science Faculties. In addition to
providing networking opportunities, the Osler Hour is a fundraising
mechanism for local health-related charities.

2010/01/07:
New Year!
Welcome to a wonderful new year!
(1) Our Shadowing Schedule has been updated
Two updates are forthcoming:
(2) A new batch of executives are now at the helm of the Osler Society! (Except for yours truly, who is irreplaceable, clearly.)
(3) A wonderful new activity has been introduced, the Osler Hour. The first was yesterday, and updates will soon come.
2009/11/09:
Massive update
(1) The French Clinic presentations have been updated. See our Readings and Downloads Page. You will now need to have gone to a Clinic to access these.
(2) Events have been updated.
For a club as active as us, a month with no updates means I was
ridiculously behind. Now you can check out all the awesome things that
have happened!
(3) We had our annual Osler Banquet and Lecture with Dr. Thomas Pogge on November 4th. Wait for our updates and photos!
(4) Our next event is another Philosopher's Cafe with Dr. Barney, on whether more information in medicine is always a good thing.
3rd Philosopher's Cafe, Fall 2009 - October 1st 5 PM Thompson House Basement
Our third Cafe will be moderated by the Philosopher Dr. Blattberg, and the topic will be "Is a Just War a contradiction in terms?"
The
Philosopher's Cafes are perhaps the most distinctive and popular Osler
Society activity, where 20-40 students from all walks and ways join
together for lively discussion of topics - controversy, immediacy, and
fascination guaranteed. The Cafes are moderated by an expert in the
topic, who is expected (and will) take sides, give opinions, and push
us to think, argue, and question our assumptions and limits.
See our events page for more details!
2009/09/12:
Second Philosopher's Cafe - Dr. Andre Costopouls: "Do human decisions matter?"
2nd Philosopher's Cafe, Fall 2009 - Sept. 24th 5 PM Thompson House Basement
Our second Cafe will be moderated by the Anthropologist Andre Costopoulos, and the topic will be "Do human decisions matter?"
See our events page for more details!
2009/09/9:
First Philosopher's Cafe
1st Philosopher's Cafe, Fall 2009 - Sept. 10th 5 PM Thompson House
Our first Cafe will be moderated by the Philosopher Greg Mikkelson, and the topic will be "How special are humans? Doing justice to all 10 million species on Earth"
See our events page for more details!
All in all it is shaping up to be an exciting year. Our banquet still awaits,
and with the turn around of medical students as fast as it is, we are
always on the look out for helping hands, enthusiasm, and exciting
ideas. As a club our focus is medical humanities and their application
in clinical medicine, if you want to be on board one of the coolest
clubs in McGill Med - let us know - our email is oslersociety.mcgill@gmail.com.
Our Shadowing program
has been completely revamped! If you are a Med-1 or Med-2
(priority for Med-1's) who want to shadow a doctor, whether you want to
be in the ER with a psychiatric patient, or with a
cardiologist on life-saving rounds, or an general internalist puzzling
together complex pieces of a patient history, chances are we have what
you need. For in-depth understanding of each speciality, we recommend
that you seek out your own contacts for extended periods of shadowing,
but we are where you can get your foot in the door and find first
exposure. See
the details on our Shadowing page.
