Previous Division Director:     Dr. Antoine Loutfi (2001 - 2007)

The mission of the Division of Surgical Oncology is to (i) provide quality care to cancer patients benefitting from surgery, (ii) conduct clinical and basic research aimed at enhancing surgical care for patients and (iii) train the future generation of surgical oncologists.

The Division includes surgical oncologists from several specialties who provide care to patients with cancer at the McGill-affiliated hospitals and who are members of the multidisciplinary teams involved in cancer care.

McGill surgical oncologists are international leaders in delivering innovations in this field to the patient population. Surgical oncologists in the Department have conducted and collaborated on a range of research projects aimed at refining surgical techniques as well as improving patient outcomes.  Research includes comparisons of different surgical techniques, molecular profiling & personalized medicine, psychosocial issues as a result of surgery, and the conduct of clinical trials from the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP).  Recently, they have led the way in robotic surgery for gynecologic oncology and urologic-oncology and are now expanding this to surgery on head and neck cancers.

The Department’s surgical oncologists are involved in the teaching and training of medical Residents and Fellows. The  Surgical Oncology Residency/Fellowship Training Program directed by Dr. Ari Meguerditchian, was re-accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2013 and also received accreditation by the Society of Surgical Oncology.
