The Care of the Elderly Enhanced Skills Program is a supplementary six or twelve month R3 training program dedicated to the care of the elderly upon completion of the two-year core Family Medicine Residency.  The McGill University program is one of the oldest programs in Canada and has trained thirty fellows to date.  A conjoint program committee from the Department of Family Medicine and the Division of Geriatric Medicine oversees the content and organization of the training program. Successful graduates receive certification from the College of Family Physicians of Canada as well as a diploma from McGill University attesting to the completion of the Care of the Elderly program.  The program is geared to improving residents’ comfort level and skills for managing elderly patients in outpatient, inpatient, long-term care and home care settings. 

Who should apply?
Family Medicine Residents who are completing the second year of Family Medicine Residency, or practicing family physicians, who are interested in:    

McGill Care of the Elderly graduates have gone on to pursue roles in acute care geriatric assessment and consultation, long-term care, geriatric day hospitals and community practice with a special focus on caring for the elderly.

Rotations / Sites

Training sites include the Jewish General Hospital, St-Mary’s Hospital, the Royal Victoria Hospital , and the Montreal General Hospital . Clinical rotations provide experience in acute care geriatrics, Geriatric Psychiatry, Geriatric Day Hospital , outpatient geriatric assessment, inpatient geriatric consultation, Memory Clinic, CLSC home care, long-term care and palliative care. Elective rotation opportunities can be tailored to trainees’ particular interests.

A seminar introducing fellows to research is provided early in the academic year to facilitate the development and completion of scholarly projects. The Department of Family Medicine and the Division of Geriatric Medicine are rich in resources and faculty to support research and other academic projects. Protected time is provided as a one month rotation plus a scheduled half day for research weekly.
