Lancelot Pinto


Lance is a pulmonologist from Mumbai, India. He attended medical school at the Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College in Mumbai. His interest in tuberculosis originated from his postgraduate training at the P.D.Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre, one of the busiest tertiary TB care centers in the private sector in Mumbai. He is currently a graduate student in the McGill Epidemiology program and plans to further pursue his research interests that focus on the involvement of the private sector in TB control in India, under the supervision of Dr. Madhukar Pai.

Anurag Bhargava


Anurag Bhargava, a National Talent Search Scholar, did his post-graduation in Internal Medicine from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, in 1990 and served there till 1994. After a further stint in teaching , in 1999 Anurag became associated with People's Heath Support Group, a not-for profit organization which has developed a low cost rural hospital,and a community health programme in an underserved area in central India. He was instrumental in developing their TB treatment initiative which diagnoses about 500 patients per year. His experience of dealing with patients with tuberculosis at different levels of care, as well as the problem of tuberculosis at the community level, has fueled his research interest in issues related to treatment as well as epidemiology and control of TB. He will be working under the supervision of Dr. Richard Menzies and Dr. Madhukar Pai for his thesis.

Alice Zwerling


Alice completed her Bachelor's degree in Microbiology and Immunology with a minor in Philosophy in 2004. She developed an avid interest in Tuberculosis research while working on a project for Dr Kevin Schwartzman, which led her to pursue a Master's degree in Epidemiology. Her thesis incorporated molecular epidemiology and geographic information systems in an examination of the spatial distribution and transmission of Tuberculosis on the Island of Montreal. Her doctoral research involves the evaluation of new diagnostic tests and biomarkers for tuberculosis.

Daphne Ling


Daphne grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, and received her BA in Public Health from UC Berkeley in 2004. She was the first graduate in the brand-new undergraduate program. She stayed at Berkeley to complete a MPH in Epidemiology & Biostatistics. Daphne's passion for TB research has taken her from the California state health department to a molecular epidemiology lab and even abroad to the Taiwan CDC. She looks forward to continuing the journey at McGill University.

Hojoon Sohn


Hojoon is a Korean national, living in the US. He did his AB in biochemistry from Bowdoin college, Maine, and his MPH from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. During his MPH training, he developed a strong interest in health economics. He subsequently decided to focus his interest in economic evaluations of new TB diagnostic tests and worked for the Foundation for Innovative New Diagnostics (FIND), based in Geneva. Currently, Hojoon serves as a consultant for FIND in health economics. He will join the PhD (epidemiology) program at McGill, starting Fall 2009.

Samuel Schumacher


Samuel grew up in Berlin, Germany and did his MSc in Molecular Biotechnology at the Technical University of Munich. After studying a term abroad at the National University of Singapore and doing his Master's project at UC Berkeley, he lived in Peru for two years working on Tuberculosis diagnostics. He recently completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Epidemiology with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and looks forward to continuing his research on TB diagnostics during his doctoral research.

Jessica Minion
Co-Supervisor


Jessica completed a BSc (hon) in Physiology and Developmental Biology at the University of Alberta before attending medical school at the University of Calgary. She began her medical residency in 2005, specializing in Medical Microbiology at the University of Alberta. Jessica is currently a graduate student in the McGill Epidemiology MSc (thesis) program under the supervision of Dr. Madhukar Pai and Dr. Dick Menzies. Her research projects involve evaluating new TB diagnostics and synthesizing evidence on TB diagnostics.

Laurence Brunet


Laurence is French-speaking Quebecer living in Montreal. She always wanted to work in a health-related field and she became particularly interested in infectious disease during CEGEP. She pursued this interest by doing a bachelor's degree in Microbiology at Université Laval, during which she spent a semester in Toulouse, France. Having completed training in microbiology and laboratory research, Laurence has decided to move into applied infectious diseases epidemiology and public health research. She is currently a MSc (epidemiology) student at McGill, where she is working on tuberculosis.

Ioana Nicolau


Ioana completed her B.Sc. Honours in Health Science with a minor in Psychology at Carleton University, in Ottawa. She became interested in the field of epidemiology and infectious diseases after taking the Graduate Certificate in Population Health Risk Assessment and Management at the University of Ottawa. Ioana’s travels to Europe, India and the Middle East have prompted a great interest in global health, which she intends to pursue by completing her M.Sc. in Epidemiology at McGill University and working under the supervision of Dr. Madhukar Pai in tuberculosis epidemiology.

Caroline Chartrand


Caroline attended medical school at the University of Montreal. She completed her medical residency in general pediatrics in 2009, also at the University of Montreal. She is currently a graduate student in the McGill Epidemiology MSc (thesis) program, while working part-time as a pediatrician at the CHU Ste-Justine in Montreal. Her thesis research is focused on evaluating the accuracy and clinical impact of rapid diagnostic tests for influenza.
