During the summers after Med-1 and Med-2, we do encourage you
to take some time off. Medical school is demanding, and you will
do better when you are refreshed. If you wish to pursue
something more formal during that time, in addition to research
(discussed previously), the following are just a few examples of
what you might consider:
IFMSA Exchange – pre-clinical and clinical
international exchange program; watch for information in the
Murmur and on your class listserv during the year
Rural Quebec Medical Program – paid summer jobs
and internships en région
ICM Elective (summer after Med-2) – clinical elective that
can be carried out in any medical setting of your choice
(domestic or international), as long as you find a supervisor
willing to take you on; see the
electives website for details and procedures
NOTE: ICM electives can count towards your required 20
elective weeks – contact
careeradvisor.med@mcgill.ca for details
International Health Opportunities – listing of
opportunities and organizations compiled by members of the
University of Massachusetts Medical School; doing an internet
search for "international health volunteer" can also yield
interesting options
