There are active basic labs in lipid research (Drs. Genest, Marcil, Sniderman, Cianflone), genetics (Dr. Engert) as well as clinical research projects at the various sites. There is a Technology Assessment Unit at RVH headed by Dr. J. Brophy and Epidemiologic Research at all adult sites (Drs. Brophy, Eisenberg, S. Grover, L. Pilote [MGH Clinical Epidemiology]. Dr. Buithieu has active studies in brachial artery reactivity and other vascular biology. Dr. Giannetti has active research interests in Heart Failure, Transplantation and Ventricular Assist Devices.

Clinical Trials

Study Name: BEAUTIFUL
Goals: To show safety and utility of a new If channel blocker ivradabine in patients with CAD and decreased LV EF.

Inclusion/Exclusion: Stable CAD, EF <40%, heart rate >60/min at rest, LVEDD 56 mm on echo. Long term placebo controlled study.

Study Name: HAT Study
Goals: Post anterior MI with EF>30%- randomisation to teaching video resuscitation vs home AED
Principal Investigator: Dr. M. Sami.

Study Name: Genetics of High Density Lipoproteins
Goals: Positional cloning, candidate gene and gene chip strategy for novel genes
Principal Investigator: J. Genest MD; M. Marcil, PhD

Inclusion/Exclusion: HDL-c <5th percentile for age and gender

Study Name: TIMI 36- MERLIN
Goals: To assess effects of ranolazine on ischemic events in ACS
Principal Investigator: R. Haichin (RVH), T. Huynh (MGH)

Inclusion/Exclusion: ACS within 48 hours. Exclusion for intolerance to meds.
Sponsorship: CVT Therapeutics
   
Study Name: JUPITER
Goals: To assess whether rosuvastatin 20 mg or placebo will prevent cardiovascular events in patients with low LDL and high hs-CRP
Principal Investigator:  RVH: J. Genest, Sub I: M. Smilovitch, J. Buithieu

Inclusion/Exclusion: 15, 000 patients with LDL < 3.36 and hs CRP > 2.0. Age M>55, F>60 with established. TG < 5.65. Follow-up 3,5 years
