Cardiology
The Faculty
postgraduate program in Cardiology trains clinically mature and competent
specialists with a broad level of expertise in the diagnosis and management
of both routine and complex cardiovascular disease.
The training
program is carried out at the:
Montreal
General Hospital
Royal Victoria Hospital
Sir Mortimer B. Davis Jewish General Hospital
Montreal Children's Hospital
Saint Mary’s Hospital Center
Lakeshore General Hospital
Dr. Nadia
Giannetti is the Interim MUHC Director of Cardiology.
Dr. David
Langleben is the Jewish General Hospital Director of Cardiology
To be eligible
for this program, candidates must have completed three years of
internal medicine training.
During the
three-year program, the principal clinical experiences will be coronary
care, consultations for both outpatients and inpatients, and
outpatient-based clinical care. Noninvasive and invasive diagnostic skills,
including electrocardiographic interpretation, exercise ECG, transthoracic
and transesophageal echocardiography, and cardiovascular nuclear medicine,
will be acquired. All trainees will learn the basic skills of right and left
heart catheterization and coronary angiography and participate in
percutaneous coronary interventions. Trainees will become proficient in
procedures such as cardioversion and temporary transvenous pacemaker
insertion. Proficiency in arrhythmia diagnosis and management will be gained
through analysis of Holter monitor recordings and participation in
electrophysiologic studies. Rotation through the active cardiac surgery
program provides skills in perioperative management and an understanding of
cardiac physiology during recovery. During rotations at the Montreal
Children's Hospital, candidates will acquire the fundamentals of pediatric
cardiology and the McGill Adult Congenital Heart Clinic provides exposure to
patients that have grown to adulthood. Residents in their final year spend a
month of community cardiology at Saint Mary’s Hospital or the Lakeshore
General Hospital.
The longitudinal
out-patient cardiology clinic experience allows residents to follow their
own patients under the supervision of an attending cardiologist.
Acquisition of an
approach to performing research, and completion of a research project, are
considered essential to a successful cardiology training period, and
candidates will be expected to participate in a research project (basic,
clinical or epidemiologic) in the area of cardiovascular disease, over the
three-year period.
Weekly clinical,
echocardiography and research conferences are held, covering all areas of
cardiovascular disease. Residents are liberated from clinical activities for
academic half-day every Wednesday afternoon.
