Students interested in applying for either the M.Sc. or PhD program in Experimental Medicine or the Clinical Research Diploma may proceed as follows:

In all cases, please follow the instructions below and in the downloaded or printed version of the documents.

Your application should contain the following material:
Failure to complete any one of the below requirements will only delay the consideration of your application

l.    Completed Application Form (please note that the Department is: Medicine, Division of Experimental Medicine). Failure to complete all sections of the application form will cause delay in the application process.

2.   Application fee of $60.00 which may be paid by (1) certified personal cheque, money order or bank draft (drawn on a Canadian or U.S. bank) made out to McGill University or (2) credit card.  Personal cheques will not be accepted.  (Please note that this requirement also applies to students who have previously attended McGill University)

3.   On a seperate sheet, please give the names of two professors whom you have asked to provide letters of reference (neither of these should be from the proposed supervisor).  These letters of reference should be on letterhead paper and should bear original signatures and must be sent to:  Dr. Hugh Bennett, Director, Division of Experimental Medicine, Lady Meredith House, Room 101, 1110 Pine Avenue West, Montreal, Quebec  H3A 1A1

4.   Curriculum Vitae.

5.   Two (2) official copies of all transcripts of marks (please note that a cGPA of 3.2 - 3.4 is required in order to be considered for entry into the programs).

6.   Letter stating why you wish to undertake the desired program

7.   Non-Canadian applicants whose mother tongue is not English, and who have not completed an undergraduate degree using the English language, must submit documented proof of competency in English [(e.g. minimum score of 550 on Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or minimum overall band of 6.5 on the IELTS exam)]

8.   Moreover, all applicants educated outside of the United States or Canada must submit Graduate Record Examination (General) scores in order to be considered for admission into the program

Each application is individually assessed by the Admissions Committee of the Division.  However, even though a candidate’s academic record (and GRE and TOEFL results for foreign graduates) may warrant acceptance into the M.Sc. or Ph.D. program, the student cannot enter either of these programs until a professor willing to supervise the thesis work, and to financially support the student, is found.  (Please note that the reverse is not true: even though a student may have found a supervisor willing to accept him/her into the laboratory, this does not guarantee admission into the program.  Admission is based solely on the student’s record).

A listing of supervisors, their research projects, as well as their last three publications will soon be available on our web site. In the meantime, students who are actively searching for a supervisor are encouraged to send an e-mail to the departmental office whereby they introduce themselves, state their background, which area of research they would be interested in working, etc.  To this they should attach a current c.v.  We will then forward your e-mail to all supervisors in the Division, requesting that, if they are looking for a graduate student of this particular background, that they contact the candidate directly to discuss the possibility of undertaking graduate studies under their supervision.

Students should either e-mail or write to prospective supervisors in order to find a laboratory in which there is a vacancy.  This may be done either before or after having applied to the Division.  The supervisor must provide a 1-2 page description of the proposed thesis project before any admission into the program will be processed.
